A couple of weeks ago, our devotional looked at When Grasshoppers Look at the Stars, where I pondered the immensity of God, the majesty of the universe, and the apparent insignificance of man. I say apparent because those whom God calls grasshoppers are infinitely special and uniquely loved, because God sent His Son to die for us.

It was in Isaiah 40 that God described humanity as grasshoppers. This is a chapter that reveals the vastness and grandeur of God. He measures the oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers in His hand. The nations are like small dust, a mere drop in the bucket in His sight. He knows everything, yet He had no teacher. God is the fountain of all knowledge. He sits above the circle of the earth. He stretches out the heavens like a tent for man to dwell under. He measures the span of the universe and weighs the mountains in His scales. He is the One with no equal.

This is a thrilling, poetic description of God in His majesty and dominion.

But He is also a shepherd.

This is different. No longer do we see only the almighty power of a resplendent being. We see gentleness, feeding His flock, gathering the lambs in His arms, and showing particular care to the ewes with young.

God is great in every respect, yet He has the gentlest of spirits. He cares for the most vulnerable. He promises to defend the fatherless and the widow. He deals with injustice everywhere.

He loves the unloved. ❀️

He forgives by dispensing mercy and grace. Sending His Son into the world as a man, as the gentlest and kindest of men, was the most gracious act ever performed in human history.

God has all power at His disposal, yet He uses that strength to carry us all the days of our lives. πŸ’ͺ🀍

Is this not a God worth trusting, worth serving, and worth living for?

Is the gentle God your Shepherd today? πŸ‘
