LIGHT FOR THE JOURNEY

LIGHT is a daily and practical necessity. From sun- light to the electricity which powers our homes and illuminates the headlamps on our vehicles light is available in all kinds of strengths and all very needful.

LIGHT is essential because we are in the dark. The sun hangs amid the outer darkness of the universe as a beacon of life-giving light. By night, on Earth, the simplest of household tasks or the shortest of journeys would be impossible without something to help us see.

There are kinds of darkness, however, which even the brightest of lights cannot dispel.

The darkness of life’s uncertainties; of sickness and of death casts their shadow over our lives continually. Who knows what we will meet with around the next bend in life’s journey?

We are also upset by the darkness of the world’s cruelties. Murder, abuse, war and bloodshed generates a fearful litany of suffering produced by man’s inhumanity to his fellow man.

There is another darkness, however – the darkness within our natures, the moral decay with which we were born that hunts us down and plagues our natures. This is man’s moral darkness, which explains the depraved nature of our spirits and the frightening potential for evil that resides in every mind.

As we make our way along life’s journey these menacing shadows stare at us with their confusing and misleading message. Neither the light of the sun nor any human instrument can provide us with the necessary light to see the way ahead.

The LIGHT of Hope and Peace are the strongest of all beams as they provide true vision in a dark and troubling world.

The Word of God is a book of LIGHT. One poet wrote in the Psalms about the Bible being a lamp for the feet and a light for the path. In an uncertain world, the Scriptures supply us with a certain message bursting forth with glorious promises.

At the heart of the Biblical revelation is Jesus Christ the Son of God. He described Himself as being the LIGHT of the world with His message of truth and redemption.

This LIGHT penetrates where no other can reach. It searches our hearts teaching truth and bringing hope. The gloom then begins to lift because Jesus comes.

The Bible teaches that we are either the children of darkness or the children of light; there is no neutral territory.

Hope when facing the surgeon or the coffin is not found in religion or philosophy. Peace when confronted with war and suffering cannot be contrived by human logic. The moral darkness, the decay of the soul remains – the plague of the heart which leaves us without God and without hope.

The darkness encroaches. Hope must be found. The LIGHT comes from the person of Christ alone. Salvation is uniquely in His person.

Without Hope dear reader? Come to the LIGHT. Come to Jesus Christ. Turn from the darkness of sin and trust in the Saviour who died for YOU.
